Pre/Post Op Diet
PLEASE BEGIN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO PREPARE FOR LAP BAND SURGERY
Begin MYOCEL 2-3 full weeks prior to your surgery
Begin two (2) scoops two-three times per day. This can be mixed in skim milk, water, fruit or fruit juice, or fat free yougurt.
DECREASE THESE IN YOUR DIET:
- All fats including butter, fatty meats fried foods, whole milk products
- High sugar foods
- Carbonated drinks (no carbonated drinks after surgery)
- High carbohydrate foods such as bread
PRE-OP DIET
The following diet is recommended to help reduce inter-op and post-op potential bleeding by removing fatty triglycerides around the liver and spleen.
Meal 1- 1 serving of 2 of the following: (yogurt, fruit, cereal, toast, bagels, waffles, muffins, eggs, or oatmeal).
Meal 2- 1 serving of Myocel
Meal 3- 1 serving of any type lean meat or fish (chicken, pork, turkey, ham, steak, etc.) and 1 serving of green vegetables (lettuce, peas, broccoli, green beans, spinach, etc.)
Meal 4- 1 serving of Myocel
The protein supplements ( Myocel) are best mixed with skim milk or Lactaid milk. The protein powder can also be mixed with yogurt or with fruit and fruit juice blenderizeds, starches
IMPORTANT
The pre-op diet is important in getting you in proper nutritional state for you surgery and to reduce the fat in and around your liver and also shrinking the liver itself. If you do not follow your pre-op diet properly, your liver may be too large, and your surgery may have to be postponed. If you have problems with your pre-op diet, or you should have any questions then please contact our office.
POST-OP DIET
The following diet is recommended to help recover from the procedure, optimize fat loss and overall health, and to minimize potential muscle wasting. In addition, the post op diet is divided into three stages to help prevent dislocation of the band, pain, and vomiting to allow gradual adjustment.

STAGE I (DAYS 1-14)
Liquid diet of 3 meals per day for 2 weeks with three protein supplements per day (one scoop in 6 ounces) between meals and at bedtimes. These are best mixed with skim milk or Lactaid milk as lactose intolerance can occur the first few weeks after surgery. The protein powder can also be mixed with yogurt or with fruit and fruit juice blenderized. Go Slowly.(30 minutes to drink 6 ounces) When you feel full STOP! No Carbonated beverages.
Meal 1 - 1 serving of one of the following: yogurt, sugar free pudding, applesauce, warm soup or broth, or baby food
Meal 2 - 1 serving of Myocel
Meal 3 - 1 serving of one of the following: yogurt, sugar free pudding, applesauce, warm soup or broth, or baby food
Meal 4 - 1 serving of Myocel
Meal 5 - 1 serving of one of the following: yogurt, sugar free pudding, applesauce, warm soup or broth, or baby food
Meal 6 - 1 serving of Myocel
Liquid Diet: Approved Items
- Coffee, tea, fruit juice ( No orange or grapefruit juice)
- Crystal Light, Nutrasweet, Sugar free Kool-Aid
- Protein drinks as advised
- Broth
- Skim milk or Lactaid milk
- Sugar free Jell-O or Sugar free Popsicles
- Low fat yogurt
- Sugar free pudding
- Applesauce or baby food fruit
STAGE II - FULL LIQUIDS FOR 2 WEEKS
Full liquids from the list below can now be gradually added to your diet.
1. 3 meals per day with a liquid protein supplement twice daily between meals.
2. No liquids with meals if soft food is included. You must wait 30-45 minutes for the pouch to empty before drinking.
3. CHEW WELL- the food must be almost liquefied before swallowing.
FULL LIQUID DIET
-Mashed potatoes
-Blenderized Soup
-Soup with noodles
-Cottage Cheese
-Oatmeal
-Grits
-Cream of wheat
SAMPLE MENU
Meal 1 - Serving of one of the following: yogurt, sugar free pudding, applesauce, warm soup or broth, cottage cheese, oatmeal, grits, V8, or baby food.
Meal 2 - 1 serving of Myocel
Meal 3 - 1 serving of one of the following: pureed meat, pureed vegetables, pureed fruit, pureed soup, mashed potatoes or V8
Meal 4 - 1 serving of Myocel
Meal 5 - 1 serving of one of the following: pureed meat, pureed vegetables, pureed fruit, pureed soup, mashed potatoes or V8
STAGE III - SOFT DIET
- Soft fruit
- Cooked vegetables and fresh green vegetables
- Soft pasta ( well cooked)
- Eggs
- Toast or crackers
Gradually add regular foods and remember:
1. Eat only at set meal times
2. No Liquids with meals or for 30-45 minutes afterwards
3. Avoid cheap calories: Fats, High calorie liquids, Sweets, ice cream, junk food, cookies
4. Protein supplement drinks 1 time a day for a 1 month
Summary
- Follow three stage diet plan to allow gradual adjustment
- Eat only at set meal time.
- Chew well!
- Avoid fibrous foods ( asparagus, pineapple, rhubarb, oranges, dried fruit, etc)
- When you feel full STOP!
- Liquids, junk food and sweets do not relieve hunger! Only solid food, which fills the pouch and empties slowly, will relieve the hunger.
- Stay hydrated. Drinks plenty of water and fluid between meals.
